Turku is a city of shipbuilders, whose shipyards have employed the likes of former President Mauno Koivisto as well as several generations of working men and women. The shipyard theme and the stories of shipbuilders can also be seen and heard in Turku’s cultural offerings in the spring.
The River Aura is the heart and soul of the city, at the estuary of which Finland's oldest city began to grow in the early 13th century. Over 800 years of urban history has not reduced the significanve of the river to the image of Turku – quite the opposite.
Turku is the midpoint of medieval events in Finland. Also this summer there are several different medieval events that Turku has to offer.
In the end of June the Medival Market takes place at the Old Great Square of Turku. This is Finland’s largest medieval and historical event – we'll garantee this event has the real marketplace atmosphere!
At the same time on the 30th of June Turku Castle hosts its own Middle Ages day. There are all sorts of activities, like fascinating guided tours, tournament for kids and much more.
The highlight of medieval summer will the the tournament at Turku Castle from 9th to 15th July. This tournament is at the same time the European Championships for historic sports and participants are expected throughout Europe. During the competitions, the castle and it's environment will also be full of medieval atmosphere with guided theme tours and market stalls.

This weekend the riverside has again attracted people with the annual Fish Market. Various stalls bring people together on the other side of River Aura to enjoy the arrival of spring.
There are many hidden treasures in Turku, like these lovely little cafés. For example Domcafé, Fika Café and Fabbes Café are all situated quite close to each other and close to the Turku Cathedral. Maybe one of these could be your favourite café in Turku?

Did you spot a picture taken from the icy River Aura? It's not every winter we have a thick ice on River Aura – at least one where we could walk on. This year the chilly temperature made the water freeze and the river was covered with thick ice. It's been so nice to see, how happy and cheerful people have been about this phenomenon! Walking on ice has been the wintry way to take a walk, meet friends and enjoy outdoors.
